Composite Drive Shafts

In 1984, Ford began using composite drive shafts in two production vehicles. Aerostars and Econolines equipped with trailer tow packages included composite drive shafts. The composite shafts solved design problems with higher shaft speeds and higher torques associated with trailer towing.

WHY COMPOSITE SHAFTS?

  • Higher critical speeds allow higher max RPM with less vibration.

  • Lower weight reduces rotational inertia for faster acceleration and deceleration.

  • Longer spans eliminate two piece shafts with center bearings.

  • Safer than a heavy metal shaft that will smash everything in its path. But when things go wrong with a composite shaft, it will tend to self-destruct and disintegrate; minimizing damage of the surrounding parts.
